www.ceotodaymagazine.com 20 CEO Today Business Women of the Year Awards 2018 UNITED KINGDOM EMMA EDHEM, CC Turkish British Chamber of Commerce & Industry ABOUT EMMA EDHEM, CC Emma Edhem, is a Barrister of 25 years standing, Deputy Head of International Law, an Arbitrator and a Mediator in the UK’s biggest set of Barristers’ Chambers, No 5 Chambers. She is in a unique position of being the only person of Turkish heritage who is both a Barrister and a UK politician. Having taken up a political career early in 2014 in the City of London Corporation, Emma remains the only person of Turkish heritage, in the 800 year history of the City, to have held this position. She started her career in the City of London on the Planning and Transportation, Community and Children’s Services and, Streets and Walkways Committees. Emma now also serves on the Police Committee, Health and Wellbeing Board and Licensing Committee. Emma was elected as Chairman of the City’s Standards Regime Review Working Party, passing Standards that govern all elected Common Councilman, Alderman and Officers, through the Court of Common Council. More recently elected as Lead Scrutiniser in the Special Interest Area for Public Order and Strategic Firearms in City Police. Emma was previously Governor at the Royal Bridewell Hospital and continues as Governor of the prestigious City of London School for Girls. Emma is the recipient of the 2016 UK Grassroot Diplomat Business Driver Award for outstanding politicians. She beat a shortlist of 100 politicians and diplomats for her leadership of international business expansion. Emma also won the Eduplus Community Involvement Award in 2013. Emma Edhem is the first woman to have held the post of Chairman of the Turkish British Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TBCCI). She led the Chamber to become a driving force for business expansion and has since been approached by other countries to help raise their Business Councils to functioning levels. She also founded The Young Entrepreneurs and Professionals Platform, the Young City Financiers Platform and is founder and Chairman of EMYA Global, the strategic global facilitators of trade and investment for high value transactions. Emma was tasked with and engaged within a team re-writing UK policy on asset recovery. She enjoyed successes in cases hitting global interest. One instantly recognisable success was the case for the Republic of Turkey in the highly libellous case of Prime Minister (now President) Erdoğan and the Daily Telegraph. Her legal practice spans international and geopolitical law as well as cross border and national commercial and high value financial fraud disputes. Emma’s successes in the Court of Appeal have been listed in the Law Reports of England and Wales. Emma Edhem is also on the Board of Directors of the British Azerbaijan Law Association, is founder and on the Board of Directors of the UK Hungarian Business Council, President of the Sudan-British Business Council, a Member of the Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn, an Ad Eundem Member of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple, Freeman of the City of London, Court Assistant of the Worshipful Company of Woolmen and appears in Strathmore’s as a leader in the field of law. Emma sits on the Scholarship panel of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple and has served on the Equality and Diversity Committee of the Bar Council and the External Implementation Group of the Solicitors Regulation Authority. In the legal field, Edhem’s greatest strengths lie in fearless, tenacious and tactical forensic dissection, creative and practical interpretation of law and fact, and strong advocacy.
