ABOUT DOROTHY CHAPEYAMA Dorothy Chapeyama, a Chartered In- surer, is the Chief Executive Officer of Reunion Insurance Company Limited, a reputable and fast growing indigenous insurance company in Malawi, which she co-founded in 2005. Her career started with Commercial Un- ion Assurance Company plc which she joined in 1984 straight from university. She religiously served the Malawi Branch of the company for twenty years before it was disposed off through an acquisi- tion, rendering her jobless for a while. An opportunity arose for Dorothy and a colleague to start a new insurance firm which was incorporated on 3rd may 2005 with a staff-roll of 10 employees in two offices. The company has now grown under her leadership to a staff compli- ment of almost 60 employees, operating from eleven offices spread throughout the country, and boasting of an annual turno- ver of about MK3.5 billion from an initial capital of MK10million. Dorothy holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Accountancy) degree and a Master of Business Administration (MBA), from the University of Malawi. She is a Chartered Insurer by profession and an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute of United Kingdom. She plays very important advisory and leadership roles, not only to Reunion In- surance staff, but to the entire insurance industry. She has mentored young and up-coming professionals, especially the female; and she still does. She has held various positions in industry forums in- cluding Education Secretary, Vice Presi- dent, Part Time Lecturer and many more. She served as president of the Insur- ance Institute of Malawi in 2001 and also President of the Insurance Association of Malawi for three terms in 2004, 2013 and 2014. She was the first female president for both the Insurance Institute and the Insurance Association of Malawi. Dorothy enjoys reading, travelling, cook- ing and sewing.
